The hot topic of conversation this week at Laundry HQ has been celebrity spotting, after I had an exciting brush with celebrity when I was in A&E on Monday night (don’t worry I’m fine, I was accompanying a friend after a not-very-nice affair, but he’s doing better now). Hmmm I thought that man looks a lot like Pierce Brosnan, but what would he be doing in Tooting? But no, it was James Bond himself, in St George’s A&E! And I was in sniffing distance of him!
I also once sat opposite Hannah from S Club 7 on the tube and also saw Richard E. Grant in a computer shop but those are less exciting, however for the latter I was with my mum who attempted to act in the coolest and most aloof I-haven’t-just-spotted-someone-famous way and failed miserably by staring open mouthed at him. Jess (former Laundry head honcho, now guest contributor and Laundry fashion guru) has a friend who shoes were vomited over by
Fergal Sharkey of Undertones and Teenage Kicks fame and Shane McGowan once fell down stairs and landed at her feet. There’s some sort of foot theme going on there.
By far the most exciting celebrity encounter in the BioRegional offices (where The Laundry lives) was had by Matt, who had dinner with (ok, in the same restaurant as) Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee! Julia (one time Laundry helper) is on a different level to the rest of us when it comes to bumping into famous people, her Friday nights sound like an issue of Heat magazine. She lives down the road from Kate Moss and thus regularly fights her way through paparazzi. However, she has learnt a lesson in how to deal with celebrity snappers after spotting Jude Law in Primrose Hill chucking orange juice over photographers. She also saw Sadie Law in a changing room (but I can’t say what size clothes she was trying on, I’d probably get sued) and best of all, Chrissie Hynde of the pretenders eating cheese on toast in Maida Vale. Harry’s sole brush with fame is once sending fan mail to Philip Schofield (she claims this was when she was a young ‘un, more Gordon the Gopher than This Morning but I’m not so sure…) but maybe that belongs in earlier discussions of inappropriate crushes.
