Pet names

No not talking darling, treacle or honeybun.  Actual pet names, we’ve decided they come in three categories.  Anthropomorphic, descriptive and maverick.

Anthropomorphic (elegance with personality)

Jess’s hairdresser has a dog called Gary.

Jennie heard someone calling for their dog the other day, ‘here Gareth.

My best friend Maria had a dog called Bridget and cats called Alice and Betty.

Harriet had Megan the dog and Henry the Hamster.

Descriptive (forthright, no nonsense)

Jennie named her cats Big Blackie, Little Blackie, Grey Girl and Grey Boy.

My sister called her guinea pig Reuben.  It was a ginger one; mine was black, with a ginger bum.  I was so convinced that she should call her’s Rusty that I called my one Rusty Bum, hoping that the perversity of us calling out here, Rusty, here Rusty Bum, to an almost all black guinea pig would make her change her mind.

She didn’t.

Maverick (ology)

Bob’s cats are called Cat A and Cat B

Harriet had a rabbit called Jemima Puddleduck.

A jewellery designer in Shrewsbury…

Called her cats: Fat and Scardy

And her chickens: Drumstick and Tonight.

Jess is buying two Geese (Roman ones because they are less vicious) to keep her lawn short and for fertiliser.  Please tell us suggestions for their names.  The winner gets the glory of naming an urban goose.

Tell us names of your pets, please do here.

Flymo, Victa and Murray are all lawn mower brand names which could be options.
My boyfriend’s family had a Saint Bernard named Harriet. They had her put down because she kept licking the chickens to death.
There was a news presenter in NZ who named his cat Cfor (c for cat). Turned out he read the news high on P, but it’s quite a cool name.

I’d say that’s pretty much a problem with all Harriets- chickin lickin!

I have 2 cats, called Wash and Go! (And Go’s eye’s point in different directions so he really doesn’t know if he’s coming or going!!)

Take 2 cats into the shower…….

If Roman geese, and three of them at that, then surely; Caesar, Pompey and Crassus would be appropriate!
Personally my dog is named after the talking dog in Pratchett’s Discworld series, Gaspode, as he talks, and used to be grey with bald patches from all his itching, I have now worked out he’s allergic to everything!

Sorreee, It’s actually 2 geese. They pair for life apparently (just like humans, ho ho ho) and so its mean and unscrupulous for farmers to keep 1 gander for lots of geese. So just after 2 names, one for a goose and one for a gander. I do like the grandness of Caesar and Pompey. No final decision made yet…

How about Bernard and Matthew as we all know how they will end up?

I don’t understand. Why would my geese import bird flu infected turkey meat from Hungary? They will be happy eating grass and slugs. Thus, Bernard and Matthew are inappropriate names.

Animal names in my family follow a somewhat offbeat kind of logic.
Our present cat is called Aero. This is totally sensible given that his mother’s name was Bubbles.
Our previous cat - a silver tabby - was named Cloudy by our son, because it was a cloudy day when he went with my husband to collect the kitten from his mother.
We currently also have two goldfish called Thetis and Pyramus. This is largely due to my younger daughter having a bit of a Shakespearean moment.
My elder daughter has two pet rats called Nils and Dio (I believe this has something to do with members of heavy metal rock groups).
I think the best animal name in my family was that of a tabby cat belonging to my parents; his mother’s name was Cleopatra, and like all cats he knew that the universe revolved around him. His name was Ptolemy.

A pair of Roman geese….Antony and Cleopatra a bit cliched, how about Catullus and Lesbia?

best wishes to the Laundry people, and to people everywhere who have the good sense to share their lives with non-human creatures.
