Lucky old me, I went to see Fame the musical the other day in Dartford (when I said I was going to Dartford, someone in the office said to me, isn’t that just a tunnel? Well I can confirm that it’s not just a tunnel, there’s a theatre, a car park and a bridge. Ooh and a train station) and apart from a constant refrain of ‘Fame! I’m gonna live forever’ running round my head (and an urge to jump in the air and touch my toes like the guy on the poster) it’s also got me thinking about claims to fame.

This week we have mostly been thinking about school trips, having had a team building trip to The Sticks (that place just past the leafy, outer London suburbs) with our parent charity BioRegional. Among other things we faced fears of heights with a spot of abseiling, got lost in the woods trying to orienteer our way to the pub and identified vegetables that bear vague resemblances to our characters (mines a Salsify- should you be wondering greatly).
Anyway… It got us Launderettes reminiscing about trips of yesteryear.. So, me and Helen have drudged our memories for some of the antics we got up to as little uns:

This week I have been reminded of a story my friend told me about a friend of hers who went into an audition and misread the script and said:
“I’m gonna be big, I’m gonna be the best, I’m gonna be A-One Pasino”,
NEXT,
It should have been, Al Paccino.
Comedy mishearings are the best. (more…)

The hot topic of conversation this week at Laundry HQ has been celebrity spotting, after I had an exciting brush with celebrity when I was in A&E on Monday night (don’t worry I’m fine, I was accompanying a friend after a not-very-nice affair, but he’s doing better now). Hmmm I thought that man looks a lot like Pierce Brosnan, but what would he be doing in Tooting? But no, it was James Bond himself, in St George’s A&E! And I was in sniffing distance of him!

It’s snowing - hooray - well I hope it is as I am writing this from sunny (but cold) Wednesday. (update: hurrah it is snowing. Well hurrah because it looks pretty, boo because it means we all spent far too long getting to work today and The Laundry vans are battling the elements picking up bags!)
I’ve collected some tips for you for lunchtime snowman building activity

As mentioned in an earlier post, my dad plays the banjo. The banjo (or rather banjos, he has a whole fleet of them (is that the collective noun?) in different shapes and sizes, big ones, small ones, fat ones, thin ones, long ones, short ones (ooo it’s like Dr Seuss) but all equally loud)..

This week Rachel is having a little break from typing and instead command of the keyboard has been handed over to the Laundry’s latest recruits, the hottest double act in town: Harriet and Helen! You might have spoken to us on the phone, if so we hope you liked us.
This week, we have been learning about famous double acts. It turns out there are lots, but most of them are all male or couples. Since we’re neither of these, we’ve been trying to work out which double act we’re most like.

This week around the lunch club table, I was lamenting the fact that as I have aged…(no I’m no that old – young enough to joke about aging)…I have become more stupid. (Does this count as an oxymoron because I used the word lamenting in a sentence trying to exemplify my stupidity? (If I wasn’t so stupid, would I know the answer to that question??)).

I’ve been doing a bit of thinking about Scotland. I was doing a search yesterday for a surname that I could read properly and found 14 of you of Scottish decent, the Macs and the Mcs. So three things on this:

Got some emails back from last week:
I actually did have one man and one woman say they may be interested in the Laundry dating service!!! but have not managed to hook them up…YET. Quite excited about the whole prospect of matchmaking, in a benevolent-not-scathing-like-usual way. HURRAH, so I will, or maybe will not, keep you posted, depending on whether they sign a release form. He he.

I was having a conversation with my housemate last night who said she hates the use of the word funky, especially by people who are over 30 and are trying to seem cool (!). As in “I really think we could do with some more funky office furniture” or “I went to a restaurant last night” “oh,yes?” “yeah it was really funky”. I also had a friend who was in a band who hates any other band which described themselves as funky or retro-funk or funk-reggae-groove- with Swedish beats. or the like. I just nodded but embarrassingly remembered my overuse of the word and then felt really old (even though I’m not) and a bit of a country bumpkin = she is 22 and from London. Why the distaste - or is it a polluting of the word funk?:
